His health was never a concern, and he was rarely ill. He lived a great life in his adoptive country Venezuela, with his wife and son.<\/p>\n<p>However, a surprise diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer changed his life dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turned my life upside down,\u201d Silverio says. \u201cAt the time in 1999, the leading clinicians gave me a survival time of about two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had a PSA of over 500 &#8211; a significant indicator of prostate cancer. With the illness spreading throughout his body, his prognosis was grim. It is estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3597235\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90% of deaths are caused by metastatic cancer<\/a>, meaning he needed serious treatment to save his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first reaction was to give up,\u201d recalls Silverio. \u201cI thought I should just try to give myself another two to three years of a good life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the potential ripple effect on his family and his business changed his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told as few people as possible to avoid my business being affected, and decided to travel to several, leading clinics in the United States to see what they could do for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A disappointing start to treatment<\/h3>\n<p>Silverio travelled to the MD Anderson clinic in Houston Texas, as well as the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Both institutions told him there was nothing more they could do, as at the time, the typical treatment was Hormone Ablation Therapy, which only worked for about six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told by these leading doctors in these first-class hospitals that I should not make any big plans for my future,\u201d Silverio says. \u201cIt was absolutely devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he was determined not to give up.<\/p>\n<h3>A chance encounter and signs of improvement<\/h3>\n<p>After visiting the Presbyterian, Silverio decided to try the clinic of Dr. Robert C. Atkins, founder of the famed Atkins diet. He was recommended to try by a friend but wasn\u2019t sure he\u2019d get a better response than he\u2019d already had from other leading doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, Dr. Atkins had hope for him. \u201cIt was the first time I\u2019d had a positive reaction from a doctor,\u201d Silverio explains. \u201cAs I had any chemotherapy up until that point, Dr. Atkins thought I had a good chance of strong improvement with this therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the help of ASN, Silverio was able to navigate the complexities of international health insurance and get the funding for his treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Silverio started an intensive infusion therapy, which immediately showed signs of improving his health. Dr. Atkins and Silverio\u2019s family doctor at home in Caracas gave him two to four infusions per week, with Silverio regularly visiting Dr. Atkins in New York for consultations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A unique approach &#8211; and life-changing treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After Silverio\u2019s health had stabilized, Dr. Atkins recommended further treatment called hyperthermia in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Silverio found the Aeskulap Clinic in Brunnen, Switzerland. He was treated by Professor Ben Pfeifer, M.D., Ph.D., the Director for Research &amp; Development.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Pfeifer\u2019s pioneering treatment took a new approach, helping to improve the quality of life and survival time of patients with metastatic cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe promised me a survival time of 10 years,\u201d said Silverio. \u201cThat was life-changing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Surviving and thriving<\/h3>\n<p>The treatment worked so well that after 10 years, Professor Pfeifer aimed for the next ten years. He continues to look after Silverio, 22 years on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday my PSA is between three and four, and it\u2019s stable,\u201d says Silverio. \u201cIt\u2019s a chronic disease, but it\u2019s manageable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest of all, my son has been able to pursue his own path.
